Financial aid timeline

*Note: The Department of Education (ED) made significant changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2024-25. This will change how financial aid is calculated, which caused a delay as to when the FAFSA was available to students. As of January 1, 2024, the 2024–25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is available periodically as part of Federal Student Aid’s soft launch.

Incoming first-year undergraduate students

Early spring

If you are admitted to the University and have a completed FAFSA on file, you will receive a paper estimated financial aid offer notice by mail.

*Note: Due to the delay of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2024-25, the University of Minnesota and all other schools will not receive student FAFSA information until late January 2024. This will result in a delay of 2024-25 financial aid offers. We may start sending financial aid communications about your FAFSA in April, but will not provide estimated financial aid offers until late spring.

All current and new students

Late July
  • You will receive an email with instructions on how to respond to your financial aid offer for the upcoming academic year.
  • You will need to respond to your award offer and complete required loan documentation before you receive any loans that are included with your financial aid offer.
Approximately one week before class starts (fall and spring semesters)
  • Your financial aid will be disbursed to your University student account.
  • If you have excess funds after your tuition, fees, housing, and other authorized charges are paid, that money will be sent to the bank account you designated for direct deposit or refunded to you in a check to your address on file.
  • If you have additional tuition, fees, housing or other charges that are not covered by your financial aid, you will receive a bill for those charges.

Please note

Financial Aid continues to be offered and disbursed throughout the term as students accept and respond to their aid offers.

The Department of Education (DOE) is making significant changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2024-25. This will change how financial aid is calculated, and when the FAFSA is available to students. The DOE has not confirmed an exact release date, but the 2024-25 FAFSA will be available in December 2023. For up to date information, see the Federal Student Aid website.
